CEDAR CITY — The Pine View High School girls golf team repeated as region champions on Wednesday, winning the final regular season match at Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Cedar City.
The Panthers, led by Hallie Wieland’s 85, posted a team score of 359, edging second-place Desert Hills, which finished with 363.
Desert Hills also ended up in second place in the overall season standings. The Thunder tied with Dixie in team points but earned the runner-up spot by virtue of having a lower average score. Individually, top medalist honors went to Dixie senior Annabelle Millard, who won all eight region matches this season.
Pine View head coach Matt Wieland said it was the first time he’s seen the same golfer “run the table” and win every match during the course of a season.
Millard finished the season with a remarkable 18-hole average of 73.7 strokes. Coming in second place individually was Pine View’s Alyssa Butterfus, who averaged 82.1.
In earning the team trophy, the Panthers finished with a weekly average of 354.4 strokes, while runner-up Desert Hills had 371.4 and third-place Dixie had 372.9.
“It feels great to repeat as region champs,” Wieland told St. George News afterward. “Going back-to-back in any sport is difficult, so I’m really proud of my girls and the work they put in.”
Pine View finished with five golfers among the top 12 individual region finishers.
“Anique Shirts had her career best today to leapfrog a couple girls and get in there,” Wieland said. “That’s super exciting and gives us all a boost of confidence going into the state tournament.”
Wieland noted that the season had its ups and downs. One of the main challenges, he said, was a change to the structure of the weekly tournament pairings.
“It made it really difficult for the coaches to effectively coach the girls,” he said. “I think the entire region’s scores suffered just a little. Ours certainly did.”
The state tournament is scheduled for May 11-12 at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, the same course that hosted Region 10’s Week 7 match on April 20. Pine View will be looking to repeat as state champions, while Millard will be looking to defend her individual state title.
Last weekend, Millard teamed up with Herriman High School senior Millie Terrion to win the Utah Golf Association’s Women’s Spring Open, which was also staged at Sunbrook. Both Millard and Terrion have signed to play collegiately for Utah Valley University starting this fall.
