ST. GEORGE — A crash involving three vehicles blocked the eastbound side of the road leading into Hurricane early Friday afternoon.

Hurricane Police said two people were transported by ambulance from the crash site near the corner of 3900 West State Street and state Route 9 at mile marker 3 near the corner of 5300 West and Washington County Legacy Park.

Officers said the crash, which occurred around 1 p.m., involved a white Toyota Prius that was traveling west and swerved into the eastbound lanes.

“An elderly female driving the Prius ended up crossing over into the eastbound oncoming traffic, sideswiped a silver Chevy Blazer, and then ended up in a head-on type collision with a black Subaru,” said officer Dan Raddatz with the Hurricane Police Department.

He added the cause of the crash was still under investigation with the driver of the Prius and the driver of the Blazer having to be transported. Both of the passengers in the Subaru walked away, and officers said their injuries were not life-threatening.

“She was transported to a hospital, which kind of holds up our end of being able to really figure out why, what exactly caused her to go into oncoming traffic,” Radditz said.

Firefighters on the scene had to extricate the driver of the Prius, which stopped horizontally across the eastbound lanes and kept east State Street closed for nearly an hour.

“It was a pretty ugly-looking accident,” Radditz said.

A Facebook post by the Hurricane Valley Fire & Rescue said first responders to the crash included Engine 42, Heavy Rescue 41, Medic 41, Medic 42, Medic 46 and Battalion 41, as well as the Hurricane City Police Department and the Utah Highway Patrol.
