Driver blames brake failure for 3-car collision, toppled vehicle in St. George

ST. GEORGE — Police said the driver of a Kia Telluride ran over the curb near the Mercedez-Benz of St. George dealership and tipped a Subaru Forester on its side before hitting another car on Saturday.

The crash happened at 10:15 a.m. near the intersection of Auto Mall and S. Black Ridge Dr. and St. George Fire Department and Police Department arrived quickly.

“The elderly gentleman said his brakes malfunctioned,” Officer Randall Burtis told St. George News. “He ran up on the curb and ended up striking another vehicle, which resulted in it tipping on its side. That vehicle then crashed into another vehicle.”

The driver of the Telluride, who was sent to the hospital with minor injuries, was the only person injured in the collision.

The right-hand turn lane was shut down to accommodate tow trucks from Superior Auto Body & Towing, but traffic was otherwise unaffected.

One GMC Terrain, which the Forester hit, had minor damages to the rear. A torn-up front fender, busted driver’s side headlight assembly, bumper and wheel were the extent of damages to the Subaru Forester.

Burtis said the driver of the Telluride was cited for improper lane change. The road was cleared of minor debris and all lanes opened back up around 11:30 a.m.
