Region 9 girls golf: Crimson Cliffs prevails at Sunbrook

ST. GEORGE — The Crimson Cliffs Mustangs won the first 18-hole match of the Region 9 high school girls golf season on Thursday at Sunbrook Golf Club.

The Mustangs had three of the top four scores of the day, led by Kate Walker’s 75. Teammates Brynlee Bandley and Lexi Leavitt shot 81 and 84, respectively.

Pine View senior Alyssa Butterfus posted the top individual score, shooting a 1-under-par 71. She finished with four birdies on her card.

“This is what we were expecting to see from Alyssa this season,” coach Matt Wieland said of Butterfus, who has signed a letter of intent to play golf for North Idaho College in Couer d’Alene, Idaho.

“She’s been working hard all year,” Wieland added. “Her game is better than ever and she’s getting better every single week.”

Butterfus added that she was grateful to be able to start the season with a win.

“Lots of hard work paid off today,” she said. “My putter was on fire. I feel blessed that God answered some prayers today.”

Although temperatures were around the low 60s at the beginning of the round, they had dropped into the 40s, accompanied by chilly winds, by the time the players were finished.

Next week’s match is scheduled for March 21 at Southgate Golf Club in St. George.
