CEDAR CITY — A man was airlifted to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon after sustaining a traumatic injury while operating a chainsaw, officials said.

Iron County Sheriff’s Lt. David Mitchell said that at 2:18 p.m., deputies and emergency responders were dispatched to a cabin located just west of Wood Ranch, just off state Route 14 in Cedar Canyon.

“The call involved an elderly man who had sustained a severe injury to his lower left leg while operating a chainsaw,” Mitchell said in a written statement emailed to Cedar City News. “Upon arrival at the scene, deputies found the man sitting on a log with a belt around his leg, which he had applied to stop the bleeding.”

Deputies then applied a second tourniquet to the man’s leg to further stop the bleeding until Gold Cross Ambulance personnel arrived, Mitchell added.

The injured man was then transported by ground ambulance to the Wood Ranch parking lot. From there, he was airlifted via Life Flight helicopter to St. George Regional Hospital.

Mitchell said on Thursday morning that he did not have any updated information regarding the man’s medical condition.

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Thursday evening, Cedar City News received an email from the injured man’s grandson, who reported that his grandfather is back home from the hospital after surgery to repair the gash on his lower leg his and is now restfully recuperating at home.

Updated Aug. 16, 12:30 p.m. to include medical information supplied by a relative.
