Police: Horse trailer rollover on SR-18 could have caused ‘a very bad day’

ST. GEORGE — A man lost control of his horse trailer on state Route 18 near mile marker 7 Sunday afternoon.

Shortly after 1 p.m., a man in a truck was pulling a trailer south down a hill when the “trailer got away from him,” St. George Police Officer Zach Muckenthaler told St. George News. He reportedly tried to make a correction to stop the trailer from wobbling, but it flipped, causing the truck to spin.

There was damage to the trailer, and a horse inside received a laceration on its leg. The truck had a blown tire, but the driver was reportedly uninjured.

“It was a very happy ending for what could have been a very bad day,” Muckenthaler said.

The driver is not expected to receive a citation, but police are still reviewing witness statements.

To avoid similar situations, Muckenthaler said drivers should “plan for something to go wrong.”

“If it’s a bumper pull, make sure you’re not driving too fast to cause the trailer to get loose on you,” he said. “Don’t overload your trailer, don’t underload it — make sure your weight is distributed evenly. It’s kind of hard with an animal in the back, but you never know how they’re going to move unless you can prevent that. So, pay attention and drive safe.”

The St. George Fire Department also responded to the scene.

This report is based on statements from court documents and law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
